**Pakistan’s recent T20I performances have left fans and analysts questioning their form and readiness for the T20 World Cup 2024. The team recently drew a five-match T20I series against New Zealand 2-2, with the first match washed out by rain. They secured a narrow 2-1 series victory over Ireland, and lost a four-match series to England 2-0, with two games abandoned due to rain.**
The biggest shock came from the first T20I loss to Ireland, marking the first time Pakistan has been defeated by Ireland in this format. This loss is particularly concerning given that Pakistan and Ireland will face off again in a group match on June 16 at Central Broward Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida.
Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa believes Ireland could cause another upset in the T20 World Cup. He pointed out Pakistan’s historical vulnerability to upsets in ICC tournaments and criticized their fielding as a consistent weakness.
“Pakistan has always been one of those teams that get upset in ICC tournaments. Their fielding has been particularly iffy, as we saw in the recent Asia Cup. Across time, Pakistan’s fielding has been very shady. I think Ireland could definitely take advantage of this,” Uthappa said.
Uthappa praised Ireland’s team, noting their strong batting lineup and formidable bowling attack led by Josh Little, who has impressed in various international leagues including the IPL. “Josh Little is a quick customer, Curtis Campher has also performed well, and Mark Adair is another key player,” he added.
Pakistan’s group in the T20 World Cup includes the USA, Canada, India, and Ireland. Their first match is scheduled for June 6 against the USA in Dallas.
With the tournament approaching, Pakistan will need to address their weaknesses and prepare rigorously to avoid further upsets and ensure a successful campaign.
